Euroradio
Euroradio - at the service of music
Euroradio is the label for the very prestigious concerts exchanged among the Radio Members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Founded in 1950, the EBU is the world's largest professional association of national and public broadcasters, numbering 71 Active Members in 52 countries throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, and 46 Associate Members in 29 other countries throughout the world. Based in Geneva (Switzerland), the EBU acts at the international level on behalf of its Members, negotiates broadcast rights for major events, especially music (notably the season of the Metropolitan Opera in New York), and operates the Euroradio satellite network.
This network is made up of 48 terrestrial receiving and 16 transmitting stations covering all of the European broadcasting area, from Reykjavík to Cairo, from Madeira to Moscow. Thanks to this network, which uses the W3 professional transponder on the Eutelsat satellite,
European public radio broadcasters have access each year to over 2,500 concerts of every genre (pop/rock, jazz, world music and folk), not to mention, of course, the entire range of Classical music. Each concert is taken on average by over 10 organizations, meaning that a Euroradio concert has an audience of some 1.7 million listeners.
Via Euroradio, European public radio broadcasters participate in many joint projects, such as the European Jazz Competition, the Euroclassic-Notturno night-time programming, Concertino Praga and Let the Peoples Sing competitions, and the Euroradio Big Band. There are also, of course, the Euroradio Seasons, which resemble international music festivals and are made up of numerous events followed by eager listeners: the Opera Season (Saturday), Concert Season (Monday), Jazz Season (Friday) and Special Days, like the traditional live Christmas Special Day, which invites audiences throughout the world to share, hour after hour, from 9.00 to midnight, in the intense musical experience of 15 countries centred around the mystery of the Nativity.
These are just some of the highlights of Euroradio which help make it the world's largest concert hall as well as an outstanding means of cultural promotion.
